The Color Purple” Shines at the Box Office, Surpasses $25 Million Milestone in Just 48hrs

Warner Bros.’ Musical Adaptation Delivers Impressive Holiday Opening and Positive Audience Reception

In a stellar performance at the box office, “The Color Purple” grossed an additional $7.1 million on Tuesday, reaching an impressive $25 million in just two days since its theatrical release. The Warner Bros. film, directed by Blitz Bazawule, is an adaptation of the beloved book and movie that later became a hit Broadway musical.

Opening on Monday, “The Color Purple” nearly set a holiday record by earning $18 million, marking the largest Christmas Day opening since 2009 and the second-biggest Christmas Day opening of all time. Notably, stage-to-screen adaptations often face challenges, but positive reviews and encouraging word-of-mouth are expected to keep this musical, led by “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino and co-starring Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and Colman Domingo, thriving on the big screen.

While the holiday season has been lackluster for some releases, “The Color Purple” secured the third spot in domestic box office charts. “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” struggles to match its predecessor’s success, landing at No. 2, while “Wonka” claims the top position with $8.9 million on Tuesday, bringing its total to an impressive $95.5 million domestically and $280 million worldwide.

In contrast, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” disappoints with a $46 million gross after five days, considering its predecessor’s billion-dollar success. Other releases, such as Universal and Illumination’s animated “Migration” and MGM’s “The Boys in the Boat,” also made their mark, with varying degrees of success. Sony’s R-rated romantic comedy “Anyone but You” enjoyed a relatively strong turnout on Tuesday, collecting $2.61 million and totaling $10.6 million.

As the holiday season unfolds, “The Color Purple” stands out as a promising contender, aiming to maintain its momentum and become the preferred choice for families through the new year.
