Monica Shares Thoughts on the Song’s Untouchable Legacy and Clarifies Relationship with Brandy
Monica, the Atlanta songstress, recently commemorated the 25th anniversary of her sophomore album, “The Boy Is Mine,” in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Reflecting on the iconic Brandy duet from the album, Monica expressed her belief that the song is a part of history and should remain untouched by cover artists. She suggested that if someone attempts a recreation, they should make it their own and bring something entirely different to the table.
Addressing the current state of her relationship with Brandy, Monica dispelled misconceptions and emphasized their strong friendship as grown women. She shared her frustration with the lingering assumption that they don’t like each other, attributing past tensions to their teenage years. Monica expressed a desire for people to move beyond comparisons and competitions, urging a more positive and supportive narrative.
The interview also touched upon a revelation from 2019 when Dallas Austin disclosed that, as teenagers, Monica had punched Brandy backstage before a performance of “The Boy Is Mine.” Monica acknowledged the incident but emphasized that they’ve evolved since then, highlighting the need to leave the past behind and appreciate their growth as individuals and artists.
