Nods to G-Funk, playful rival jabs, and vibrant storytelling define Kendrick’s latest visual.
Kendrick Lamar’s new track “Squabble Up,” from his surprise album GNX, celebrates Compton culture with humor, nostalgia, and sharp social commentary. Directed by Calmatic, the video brims with West Coast influences and iconic nods.
Set to a bouncy beat sampling Debbie Deb’s “When I Hear Music,” the video features satirical vignettes, from mosh pits to exaggerated squad poses. One standout moment is Lamar holding a spoof book titled How to Be More Like Kendrick for Dummies — a playful jab sure to spark buzz.
The video’s homage-filled visuals reference Nate Dogg’s G-Funk Classics, the Soul Train Scramble Board, and Compton’s Christmas Parade. Lamar’s dancers perform gang walks, reinforcing his deep cultural ties. The closing scene highlights Lamar dancing with Black Jesus and a Black panther statue, embodying pride and artistry.
GNX has drawn critical acclaim, with collaborations like mariachi singer Deyra Barrera on tracks such as “Reincarnated” and the SZA-assisted “Gloria.” Rolling Stone hailed Lamar as the “GOAT of 2024.”
