Highlighting Film Director, Johnny Baca

Hey Johnny, thank you for coming to AO Network to share your work. Please tell our audience who you are and what you do in the entertainment industry?

Hello AO Network! My name is Johnny Baca and I am a Director, Writer and Producer out of Los Angeles, CA.

What is it like being on a set? Run it down on what an average day on a set may look like for you?

I love being on set. I can be on set 24/7/365. It’s my church. On an average day, you’re looking at 12–14-hour days. You arrive early and stay late. As the Director, I like to arrive before anybody else to set the tone for the day, positive energy always. I stay out of my crew’s way while they set up shots. It’s always best to lead with trust in your team. Let them do their job. While that’s happening, I’m usually with my actors rehearsing. I preach shooting your rehearsals with your iPhone/Android. You can block it out and really be prepared by the time the crew is ready for you on set. That way, the day goes faster and actors, crew and I are prepared to hammer these takes out. I always have a Dr Pepper in my hand and Welch’s fruit snacks by my side. A MUST to get through the day.

How has this strike hindered your work in the industry and have you seen anything like this before?

The strike is so imperative for our industry and a much-needed stance to move forward into the future. I stand by the strike 100%. Yes, it has affected work and slowed down what’s available but stand by your writers, stand by your actors and be ready for when the proper deal is struck. It’s go time when that happens.

what is your most prized memory making films thus far and how has that helped you in your career?

My first short I ever made watching and listening to my words being acted out. I choked up, am not even gonna lie. It hit me right in the feels and was overcome with emotion. There’s just nothing like making a movie you created from a blank page to the screen. I know it’ll happen to me again when I make my first feature and I welcome that beautiful feeling. I love what I do.

Are there any new projects in the pipeline and if so, can you tell us a little about them?

YES! I have 2 new projects this year. One is a western short film about Billy the Kid entitled “Gun-Smoke & Mirrors” currently in the submission process for the festival circuit. Two is a TV Pilot entitled “WordLotto” a fun, ridiculous comedy currently in post-production. These two projects were the first time I have been hired to Direct somebody else’s writing. Learned so much and loved every minute of the process.
