Angela Bassett Receives Long-Awaited Honorary Oscar, Acknowledges Trailblazing Black Actresses

Celebrating a milestone in her storied career, Angela Bassett accepts her first Oscar, expressing gratitude and honoring Black women who paved the way.

Angela Bassett, renowned for her impactful roles, finally clinched her Oscar at the 14th annual Governors Awards. Regina King, a frequent collaborator, presented the award, praising Bassett as a “national treasure.” In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Bassett expressed gratitude, considering acting her “calling.” She dedicated the honor to Black actresses who have won Oscars, emphasizing the importance of their legacy for aspiring talents.

Bassett also paid homage to Cicely Tyson, the first Black woman to receive an honorary Oscar. Reflecting on Tyson’s influence, Bassett expressed hope for a more inclusive film industry, free from “firsts” and “onlys.” The recognition is seen as long overdue, with last year’s Golden Globe win raising expectations. Despite previous snubs, Bassett’s impactful career, spanning iconic roles from “Boyz in the Hood” to “Black Panther,” continues to shape the industry.

Looking forward, catch Angela Bassett in Netflix’s fantasy feature “Damsel,” premiering on March 8, 2024. As Bassett adds another accolade to her impressive resume, her Oscar win marks a significant moment in recognizing Black excellence in the film industry.
