A Pioneer of Hip-Hop, R&B, and Neo-Soul. Angela Laverne Brown, professionally known as Angie Stone, was a trailblazer in the music industry, leaving an indelible mark on hip-hop, R&B, and neo-soul. Born on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone’s musical journey began in the late 1970s as a member of The Sequence, one of the first female hip-hop trios, renowned for their hit “Funk You Up.”  Transitioning into the 1990s, Stone showcased her versatility as the lead vocalist of the R&B trio Vertical Hold, delivering the memorable track “Seems You’re Much Too Busy.” Her solo career flourished with the release of her debut album, “Black Diamond,” in 1999, featuring the soulful single “No More Rain (In This Cloud).” She continued her ascent with “Mahogany Soul” in 2001, which included the timeless hit “Wish I Didn’t Miss You.”  Beyond her musical achievements, Stone ventured into television projects. Notably, she was involved in discussions for a potential TV show titled “Lifestyles,” alongside Rhonda Ross (daughter of Diana Ross), LaTavia Roberson, and Melba Moore. Although the show never aired, it highlighted Stone’s commitment to expanding her artistic horizons and collaborating with fellow artists. Tragically, on March 1, 2025, Angie Stone passed away at the age of 63 due to a car accident in Montgomery, Alabama.  Her powerful voice and pioneering spirit have left an enduring legacy in the music world. She will be deeply missed by fans and peers alike.
