Norman Lear, Iconic TV Producer, Passes Away at 101 Norman Lear, the legendary TV producer who passed away at 101 last week, was a trailblazer in the world of sitcoms. While he didn’t invent the genre, he ensured it conveyed meaningful messages. In a 1999 interview with “CBS This Morning,” he shared, “My slide rule is, if I care, you care. If I laugh, you laugh. If I think it’s serious, you’ll think it’s serious.” Lear’s impact introduced us to unforgettable characters like “Sanford and Son”, “Maude”, “The Jeffersons”, the families from “Good Times” and “One Day at a Time,” and the unforgettable Archie Bunker. In a 2016 interview with “Sunday Morning,” Lear revealed the initial skepticism around casting Archie Bunker, stating that even Mickey Rooney deemed it a risky move. Yet, Lear recognized the societal readiness for the unfiltered reality presented by Archie Bunker. Google Unveils Gemini AI Model, Challenging ChatGPT Dominance
Gemini Outperforms ChatGPT in Advanced Reasoning and Multimodal Capabilities Google has announced the release of its latest artificial intelligence model, Gemini, claiming superiority over ChatGPT in advanced reasoning across diverse formats. Introduced after the recent AI safety summit, Gemini’s three versions include Ultra, Pro, and Nano, showcasing capabilities in comprehending text, audio, images, video, and code simultaneously. According to Google, Ultra outperformed leading AI models, including ChatGPT’s GPT-4, in 30 out of 32 benchmark tests, demonstrating its prowess in reasoning and image understanding. The Pro model also surpassed GPT-3.5 in six out of eight tests. The multimodal Gemini is set to be integrated into Google products, starting with an upgrade to the chatbot, Bard. Gemini’s most powerful version, Ultra, achieved a groundbreaking 90% score in a multitasking test, MMLU, surpassing human experts. Google plans to incorporate Ultra into Bard Advanced and deploy it in a code-writing tool named AlphaCode2, claiming it can outperform 85% of competition-level human computer programmers. While Gemini’s capabilities were showcased in promotional videos, concerns were raised about “hallucinations” or false answers. Google emphasized ongoing efforts to address these issues, acknowledging them as unresolved research problems. Gemini’s release will be gradual, with Pro and Nano models available initially, followed by the powerful Ultra version in early 2024. External “red team” testing and collaboration with the AI Safety Institute are part of Google’s commitment to ensure security and safety. However, delays in the UK and EU releases indicate ongoing discussions with regulators, highlighting the need for regulatory clearance. As Gemini emerges as a potential competitor to ChatGPT, discussions around its role in advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI) arise. While acknowledging Gemini’s significance in the journey towards AGI, Google’s DeepMind CEO, Demis Hassabis, emphasizes ongoing research and innovation to address remaining challenges. Gemini’s training data, drawn from diverse sources, sparks debate in the publishing and creative industries, raising concerns about the use of copyrighted content. As Gemini reshapes the landscape of AI models, the industry awaits further developments and regulatory clearances for its widespread integration. Quando Rondo Arrested on Federal Drug Charges in Savannah
Savannah Rapper Taken Into Custody by FBI on December 8 Quando Rondo, also known as Tyquian Terrel Bowman, found himself in legal trouble once again as he was arrested on federal drug charges in Savannah, Georgia, on December 8. The 24-year-old rapper was taken into custody by the FBI after a vehicle stop, with the Savannah police facilitating the arrest. The arrest took place at midnight, and it was revealed that the stop was deliberate, not prompted by a traffic violation. While Quando Rondo was arrested without incident, none of the other individuals in the vehicle faced charges. According to a spokesperson from the Savannah Police Department, the rapper, a passenger in the vehicle, is scheduled to appear in court next week, as reported by Rolling Stone. This recent arrest follows a previous indictment six months ago when Quando Rondo and 18 others faced charges related to drugs and gangs in Savannah. Accused of managing the Rollin’ 60s street gang, the rapper allegedly conspired to distribute marijuana and purchase hydrocodone pills, as reported by the Associated Press in June. After a brief period in jail, he was released on a $100,000 bond.
